Need help renting a car?

How do I rent a car?

How do I become an approved DriveShare driver?

Please note that the current minimum age for any driving rental is 25. Our site can accommodate U.S. driver’s licenses for automated verification. If you hold a foreign driver’s license, please contact us at support@driveshare.com for assistance.

Only DriveShare-vetted and approved drivers are allowed to drive listed cars. To become an approved driver, you will be guided through a one-time verification process upon submitting your first booking request. We check your driving history to ensure it meets our eligibility requirements. If it does, you can drive during any DriveShare reservation (not just those that you set up as the renter). All drivers must be at least 25 years or older to drive any vehicles listed on DriveShare.

Note that it may take up to 72 hours to become an approved driver. We strongly suggest that any drivers added to your trip create an account and submit their verification information 72 hours before any planned rental.

If your passengers are approved DriveShare drivers, they can get behind the wheel. If not, they will have to stick to the role of co-pilot. You, as the approved driver, will be responsible for vehicle pick-up and drop-off.

You must confirm that DriveShare has approved your passengers as additional drivers before letting them operate the car(s). Should a non-approved driver be allowed to drive the vehicle, the renter will be fully liable for any damage and fines that may occur.

Is there an age requirement for renting?

Yes, drivers and renters must be at least 25 years old.

Can I rent a car with a non-U.S. driver's license?

Our site can accommodate United States driver’s licenses for automated verification. If you hold an international or foreign driver’s license, we will need a copy of your driver's record report. Contact the driving authority from which you received or currently maintain your license to obtain your records. Please contact us at support@driveshare.com for further assistance.

Please note that the current minimum age for any driving rental is 25.

What kind of car can I rent?

You’ll find a large selection of fun-to-drive cars available on DriveShare. Vehicles are listed by the owners for different uses including driving rentals, chauffeured rentals, or event only (non-driving). When you are searching for your dream ride, you can choose by make and model, year, transmission, usage type and many other filters. You have the choice of price range as well.

Keep in mind, some vehicles are equipped with a manual transmission (a “stick”). If you are not proficient with a manual, please do not attempt to book this type of car. If you are unable to drive a stick, the owner can cancel the booking at any time and no refunds will be issued in this case.

Can I rent a car for an upcoming event?

Absolutely! Many of the vehicles listed on our site are also available for events and special occasions, such as weddings or photo shoots. Pay attention to the rental types offered – there are three that owners can choose from.

Driving Rentals – Allows you as the renter to drive the car yourself.

Event Rentals – The car will be delivered to you and not allowed to be driven. This type of rental is perfect for static display, such as for a photo shoot or use as an event prop.

Chauffeured Rentals – The owner, or someone they hire, will drive the car and chauffeur you in it. This is a great choice for weddings, school dances or special excursions when you want the royal treatment.

If you have questions about what you can use a particular car for, please contact the owner prior to booking. There may be flexibility in usage types and rental durations.

How does pick-up and drop-off work?

Each owner will arrange pick-up and drop-off locations with the renter. Many owners are willing to drive an agreed-upon number of miles to meet with the renter. Please sort out any questions or special requests with the owner prior to booking.

Note: Some owners may charge a delivery fee of the vehicle outside of their driving range.

Can I cancel a rental reservation?

Rentals may be canceled with at least 48 hours notification at no charge. If a cancellation is made with less than 48 hours notification, the canceling user will be charged the full fee of the rental plus a $25 inconvenience fee. Renters may cancel their trip through our site or app, and the cancellation is effective immediately.

If an owner wishes to cancel a booked trip, they must notify the renter via on-site messaging at least 48 hours in advance. They must also contact DriveShare at support@driveshare.com to indicate their desire to do so. Renters are counting on owners to provide the car, so repeated cancellations will subject the owner to removal from the site.

Why are there no cars listed in New York?

Unfortunately, due to New York state insurance regulations, DriveShare is unable to offer rentals in New York.  This applies to cars registered in New York, as well as to trips beginning in New York State.  For example, a vehicle registered in a neighboring state can be picked up in that that state and driven into New York and later returned to the state where it was picked up.  However, a DriveShare rental cannot be picked up from a location in New York or delivered by the owner for a rental beginning in the state.

Is DriveShare available outside of the United States?

At this time, DriveShare is only available within the United States.

Need information on fees and payments?

What methods of payment can I use?

DriveShare accepts all major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. Pre-paid credit cards are not accepted.

When do I get charged for a rental?

Your card will be charged the full rental as soon as your reservation is confirmed. The deposit will be held for 72 hours before the rental period begins, then released 72 hours after the rental period ends, assuming no damages were incurred.

What is the security deposit for?

DriveShare requires a security deposit (minimum $250) before you can drive any car. If your payment type is a debit card, this amount will be deducted from your account; if it is a credit card, the amount will be pre-authorized. In either case, you will be charged when you initially rent the car. However, if the trip is scheduled to begin more than a week from the time you’ve paid for the rental, the security deposit will be charged one week prior to day one of the trip. If the security deposit is declined, your trip will be automatically canceled.

This deposit will be refunded 72 hours after you return the car in the condition in which you received it. Depending on your bank or payment method, it may take up to seven business days after we release the deposit for the funds to be available in your account. Credit cards will usually be refunded more quickly, as there will be a release of authorization.

What is the 10% fee for?

A 10% service fee is charged to the vehicle renter for each rental booked. This fee will appear in your total amount when you book a vehicle rental and helps to cover a small portion of the expenses incurred from each rental transaction, including driver verification(s), trip and account moderation and customer assistance.

Insurance and coverage

Is insurance included with the rental?

DriveShare driving rentals offer 3 options for coverage that is chosen by the renter with liability, collision and comprehensive insurance, which is active throughout every rental period, from the time the trip begins and the vehicle is picked up or delivered, to the time it is returned to the owner and the trip is ended.

What vehicle uses are prohibited?

At this time, we are unable to include vehicles described as being used for any off-road, racing, timed events or driver's education on the DriveShare.com platform due to insurance restrictions.

Further prohibited vehicle uses and activities include:

  • Permitting someone who is not an approved DriveShare driver to drive a DriveShare vehicle.

  • Driving a manual transmission car without being expert in the use of clutches and manual transmissions. Note: If the drivetrain of a manual transmission car is damaged, the renter will be presumed to be at fault and will be held fully liable for repair of any damaged components of the car.

  • Allowing the DriveShare vehicle to be pushed or towed by anyone other than an authorized law enforcement or a DriveShare-approved service vehicle.

  • Using a DriveShare vehicle:

    • to tow or push anything

    • other than on paved roads (whether "off-roading", driving on unimproved roads or parking areas, or otherwise)

    • in any race, test or competition

    • with the intention to cause damage, or with deliberate, willful or reckless disregard for safety

    • to carry persons or property for hire, such as a taxi or parcel delivery service. You may, however, use the car for business purposes, such as attending meetings and carrying associated materials

    • unless a reservation has been booked. Using DriveShare vehicles without reservations or outside your reservation time constitutes unauthorized use

    • during or due to use in the commission of a crime or any other illegal activity or purpose

    • while the driver is under the influence of

      • alcohol above the legal limit or

      • any drug or medication under the effects of which the operation of a vehicle is prohibited or not recommended

    • when it has been loaded beyond its rated capacity or with more passengers than the vehicle has seat belts

    • outside the continental United States

    • without a valid license, or if you do not meet our eligibility requirements. It is your responsibility to inform us when your license is expired or suspended, or if you believe you may no longer meet our eligibility requirements

    • to transport any flammable, toxic, volatile, dangerous or illegal substances

    • to transport a pet outside of a pet carrier that keeps all pet hair inside the carrier

  • Making any alterations, additions or improvements to any vehicle

  • Smoking in the car

  • Fueling a DriveShare vehicle with an improper type of fuel

Engaging in any Prohibited Uses with a DriveShare vehicle will be grounds for fees, suspension or cancellation of your membership. It will also lower the renter's liability coverage to state minimum limits or nullify coverage where allowable by applicable state law; if the owner has encouraged the engagement in a Prohibited Use, their coverage may be similarly reduced. Engaging in any Prohibited Uses may also eliminate any coverage for the renter for any claims related to physical damage.
