I fell in love with old cars at the age of 16 when my dad let me drive the family car, which was a 1968, red VW bug. After I got married, my wife and I decided we wanted an older VW so we flew to Arizona and started looking. After missing out on a convertible ghia, we found a 1956 VW oval window and bought it for $2,500 and drove it home! I still think the '56 drove better than the '68 for some reason and can still remember driving down the freeway listening to Foreigner's "Girl like You" after I put in the new stereo! No AC, no automatic, no problem!
Soon after we bought a 1958 Mercedes Benz 220S and had it restored. Well, when the kids came an old car wasn't a smart option so off we went into new car territory. Fast forward 40 or so years and my youngest son got me back into the VW scene when we bought a 1970 Westy together, from Arizona, which he still has and enjoys with his three daughters. I moved onto this sweet 1962 Kombi, from.... Arizona! See a pattern here? haha. All original metal, no rust, it had good bones to restore, which I did. Pretty much new everything but I decided to make it a camper since it's nice to take it to the beach and get out of the sun for a bit. Or load supplies in from Home Depot or help a friend move. You know the drill if you've ever owned a VW bus!
Today, the bus is better than ever with front disc brakes from Old Speed, rebuilt front end, slightly lowered, 2 liter engine with external oil cooler, RetroSound blue tooth radio and an upgraded tranny, but not too upgraded since it's the original reduction box style transmission and more.
If you want to share the dream, please feel free to reach out to me. I will definitely want to know if you can shift if you request a self drive rental but I'm also available for chauffeuring rentals. You tell me!
