1988 Saab 900 SPG “Aero” — Enthusiast-Built, Detail-Driven
Known as the SPG (Special Performance Group) in the United States and the Aero in Europe, this 1988 Saab 900 is a one-of-a-kind, enthusiast-built project shaped by more than two decades of ownership, refinement, and passion.
Owned since 1998, it began life as a daily driver in New York City before evolving into a long-term build reflecting years of hands-on work, experimentation, and learning. For the past 15 years, it has been garage-kept in Los Angeles, brought out only for select events, photo shoots, and special occasions.
The car gained international attention when it was featured on Drive TV’s The Smoking Tire in 2015, in the episode “How Good Is a Tuned Saab?”—a segment that reached millions of viewers and introduced this unique build to enthusiasts worldwide.
At that stage, the project was still evolving. Since then, it has matured into a balanced and reliable driver’s car, shaped by decades of experience and input from the Saab community. The guiding philosophy has always been to preserve Saab’s character while elevating performance and drivability.
Performance and Mechanical Details
The engine is Saab’s legendary turbocharged four-cylinder—extensively upgraded while retaining its original block and cylinders, which have never been opened. Known for their durability, these engines can handle significant power when treated with mechanical sympathy.
Upgrades include:
Ported and upgraded cylinder head
Custom exhaust and intake manifolds
Front-mount intercooler for consistent charge temperatures
High-flow exhaust system
Upgraded fuel delivery components
Custom engine management tuning for smooth, progressive boost response
The setup produces approximately 300 HP at the crank (≈265 wheel) and 360–400 lb-ft of torque.
The gearbox—long considered the Saab 900’s weak point—has been fully rebuilt and upgraded. After seven transmissions over its lifetime, the car now runs Swedish Police “Number 8” primary gears, reducing drivetrain stress while delivering power more progressively and increasing top-speed potential to approximately 150 mph. It rewards a smooth, deliberate driving style that respects its engineering.
Chassis and Exterior
Factory steel body with fiberglass flares molded into the structure, widening the stance by approximately six inches
Custom carbon-fiber hood and rear wing
Fully adjustable suspension tuned for balance
Big-brake conversion for modern stopping power
Forged 18×8.5 wheels with custom offsets tailored to the widebody geometry
Finished in Edwardian Gray, a deep factory Saab tone, professionally refinished
Interior and Driving Experience
The cockpit remains true to Saab’s philosophy—minimalist, functional, and purpose-built. Up to eight auxiliary gauges, all matching factory illumination, monitor key systems including boost, fuel pressure, and oil temperature.
Recaro seats from a Mitsubishi Evo VII integrate seamlessly, offering excellent support for spirited driving while maintaining a cohesive, understated aesthetic.
Recognition and Community
While not a high-end restomod, this is what I consider a “home-built restomod”—crafted through patience and passion rather than unlimited budget.
At a respected Los Angeles gathering hosted by automotive journalist Johnny Lieberman, he personally positioned this Aero alongside a Porsche 911 by Singer—one of the most celebrated restomods in the world. Despite its grassroots origins, it held its own among far more expensive machines.
Over the years, the car has received recognition and praise from enthusiasts and industry figures including Magnus Walker, Matt Farah, and others who appreciate its authenticity and craftsmanship.
The Spirit of the Build
Every major system—engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, bodywork, wheels, and interior—has been refined with intention. This is not a commissioned build or a static showpiece, but a driver’s car created to celebrate Saab’s engineering through real-world experience.
Finished in Edwardian Gray, it blends Scandinavian restraint with motorsport aggression—proof that a thoughtfully developed enthusiast project can stand alongside the greats through understanding and care, not cost.
If you know Saabs, you’ll recognize it instantly. If you don’t, you’ll understand the moment you experience it.
Owner’s Note
This car represents more than 25 years of learning, trial, and passion—a project that has grown alongside me and continues to evolve. It is not perfect, and that is part of its character. Every sound and vibration tells a story of craftsmanship, patience, and dedication to the Saab brand.
